Message from the Director

Summer, 2013

Ofelia Cañez

Summer has flown by and the new semester is upon us and offers a moment to reflect on the great successes of the Raul H. Castro Institute from the past few months. The fourth annual Dare2Dream Youth Leadership conference brought together almost 500 youth from across Phoenix to participate in workshops that provided tools and encouragement for leadership. New initiatives are being created to better prepare children to enter kindergarten and start them on the path of future successes. We’ve also had the opportunity to recognize those that have made a difference in our community and those that have accomplished great goals at events like the fifth annual Latina Trailblazers and fifth annual Salute Honoring Those Who Serve. You can read more about all of the aforementioned, and more, in this issue.

This time has also offered a moment to reflect on the man that is the spirit and namesake of the Raul H. Castro Institute. Having just celebrated his 97th birthday, Governor Castro continues to be an inspiration. Please join me sending best wishes to Governor Castro and his wife, Pat, as both recuperate at home from recent health issues.

Precisely, RCI in partnership with Latino Perspective Magazine (LPM) will host the 6th Arizona Latina Trailblazer event on March 5, 2014. We seek candidates that are exemplary American legends with leadership qualities that have made significant contributions to the Arizona communities reinforcing RCI's mission; be of Latin American decent; and have been recognized for these contributions throughout their lives and especially serve as a Latina role model for the younger generation. This year the Institute is spearheading the writing of supplemental Social Studies curriculum infusing the oral stories, archives, and writings of awardees. We truly hope to encourage the community to submit an online form which is due on October 25, 2013 by visiting www.azlatinatrailblazers.com.

The RCI has a full slate of activities in the new fiscal year, and we look forward to your continued support and engagement.

In the meantime, I hope your summer was healthy, safe and relaxing!
