Overview

In response to the needs and goals of a diverse student population and community, the Department of English at Phoenix College will provide a learning environment that addresses students' life-long needs in written communication, language acquisition, literature, and the humanities. Competency-based courses will enhance student learning, develop writing skills, and promote critical thinking skills.

Sequences of courses in English, Developmental English, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Creative Writing (CRW) will promote critical thinking and will help students to develop writing skills to support their academic, occupational, and special interest goals.

Program Curriculum

Completion of ENG or ENH courses do not lead to particular degree programs, but may qualify as General Education Requirements towards an Associates Degree or Certificate. Note:  Look for General Education Designations.

English Courses include:

  • Basic Writing Skills (ENG 081): Emphasis on preparation for college-level composition with a focus on foundational skills. Establishing effective writing strategies through six or more writing projects comprising at least 1500 words in total. Prerequisites: Appropriate writing placement test score, or a grade of "C" or better in ENG071 or ESL077, or permission of Department or Division.
  • Fundametals of Writing (ENG 091): Emphasis on preparation for college-level composition with a focus on organizational skills. Developing effective writing strategies through five or more writing projects comprising at least 2000 words in total. Prerequisites: Appropriate writing placement test score, or a grade of C or better in ENG081 or ESL087, or permission of Department or Division.
  • First Year Composition ENG 101 (Gen Ed Designation FYC): Emphasis on rhetoric and composition with a focus on expository writing and understanding writing as a process. Establishing effective college-level writing strategies through four or more writing projects comprising at least 3,000 words in total. Prerequisites: Appropriate writing placement test score, or a grade of "C" or better in ENG091 or ESL097.
  • First Year Composition ENG 102 (Gen Ed Designation FYC): Emphasis on rhetoric and composition with a focus on persuasive, research-based writing and understanding writing as a process. Developing advanced college-level writing strategies through three or more writing projects comprising at least 4,000 words in total. Prerequisites: Grade of C or better in ENG101.
