Overview

The Family Development degree program prepares students to work with families, identify needs, and acquire resources that strengthen family functioning. The Family Development Specialist assists the family to gain mastery and control over important aspects of family functioning which include skills in assessing and controlling needed resources, decision making, problem solving, communication, parenting, and child development education.

Phoenix College offers two pathways for those interested in Child & Family Studies. The Family Development program is designed to meet the needs of persons interested in careers working with families in programs, agencies, organizations that provide services to families. The Early Childhood Education & Administration program is designed for those interested in teaching young children, directing a child care program, starting a childcare business, or working in a human service agency.

Skills & Knowledge

Example of skills and knowledge gained through the successful completion of the Family Development program include the abiliity to:

  • Assess families' needs and problems, and communicate with families about their needs and problems.
  • Promote positive parent/child interaction by recognizing the child's developmental needs.
  • Link families with available existing services, and facilitate their use of these community services.
  • Assist families to overcome their crisis mode, and teach living skills.
  • Plan and initiate food programs that reflect knowledge of local, state, and/or federal regulations and child nutrition.
