The Medical Billing and Coding: Physician-Based program is designed to prepare individuals for billing and diagnostic/procedural coding positions. The Program includes theoretical and laboratory instruction on the Phoenix College campus as well as a professional practice affiliation in an area health care setting.

Responsibilities of a medical biller and coder may include:

  • Process and maintain medical records
  • Retrieve records for medical personnel
  • Computer data entry
  • Filing, retrieving and transporting records

With training in medical billing and coding you will be prepared to work in settings such as clinics, physician offices, managed care organizations, and private billing or insurance companies. The program includes a professional practice affiliation in an area health care setting and provides the foundation needed for ambulatory-based entry-level coding certification examinations.

Many of the certificate program courses are part of the AAS degree program in Health Information Technology. Starting with a certificate program could give you a feel for the profession while earning credits that transfer to the degree program.

Employment Outlook

Certified billers/coders are in demand. Although certification is provided by professional organizations unrelated to this program, this curriculum will provide the strong theoretical foundation needed for selected credentialing examinations. Entry salaries vary depending on qualifications and prior health related experience.
