Komen Grant Update

January 26, 2011

The Raul H. Castro Institute has been awarded a Susan G. Komen Education Grant for 2010-2011. The grant is entitled, "Latina a Latina.”

The grant partners with Cartwright School District’s Family Resource Center to train 10-15 Hispanic women using the Promotora model to deliver information in Spanish to over 100 Latinas in the Maryvale community.

The last cafecito (workshop session) was held on November 19, 2010 and MCTV’s "Enfocate En Tu Futuro” show was present to do a story on the “Latina a Latina” grant. In addition, a few weeks prior to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure held in Phoenix, Channel 12 News aired a story about the “Latina a Latina” grant.

The institute is currently in final planning stages of the half-day symposium scheduled for February 11, 2011.

In December 2010, the institute submitted the application towards a 2011-2012 Susan G. Komen grant. The institute hopes to continue the educational efforts and expand to include breast examinations as part of phase two with Cartwright School District’s Family Resource Center. The Phoenix affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure will announce its grant awards in March 2011.  Hopefully, the RCI will be awarded.
