RCI Presents Leadership Conference for Middle School Students and Parents

August 23, 2011

The Raul H. Castro Institute, in partnership with the Cartwright School District and the Raul H. Castro Middle School, presented the 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Conference on Saturday, April 30, 2011.

Over 200 parents and students from eight middle schools in the Cartwright School District attended the conference held at the Raul H. Castro Middle School. The leadership theme “Dare to Dream," was based on the belief that youth can harness their vision by clarifying their dream and implementing an individualized strategic plan.

The keynote speakers included the Honorable Raul H. Castro, former Arizona Governor (1975-1977) and former U.S. Ambassador to three Latin American nations, and Clarence Lee, motivational speaker and powerlifting champion. After the opening keynote, the youth attended breakout sessions focusing on civic engagement, leadership, and education while parents were given an opportunity to attend a community agency information fair as well as break-out sessions regarding internet safety, nutrition, diabetes research, and breast cancer awareness. Lunch was provided at noon followed by a closing keynote speech.

Each student participant received a back pack, conference t-shirt and a certificate of attendance signed by Raul H. Castro. Conference sponsors included SRP and the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.

The Third Annual Youth Leadership Conference will be held in April 2012 at Phoenix College and will include additional middle schools serving the Phoenix area. "Moving the conference to Phoenix College was a simple decision. This central location will allow more middle school students and parents to attend and will give them an opportunity to personally identify with the college," said Ofelia Canez, Director of the Raul H. Castro Institute.
