Eric Fischl Lecture Series & Scholars Program

June 23, 2012

When internationally renowned artist and Phoenix College alumnus Eric Fischl returned to campus in April 2005, the college and community was brewing with excitement over his arrival. Over the last four years, in large part because of Eric, the Phoenix College arts scene has experienced a reinfusion of energy and excitement. As spring arrives each year and the college prepares for the annual Eric Fischl Lecture Series, we look forward with the same excitement and enthusiasm we felt in 2005 to welcoming Eric home to PC.

The Eric Fischl Lecture Series has become a highly anticipated annual event that draws hundreds of students, artists, and educators every spring for an engaging discourse about various themes focused on art. In conjunction with the lecture series, Eric has created the Fischl Vanguard Award and Award of Merit Scholarship. Through the Vanguard Award in particular, Eric has created an exciting program which recognizes emerging student talent at Phoenix College, and as such has created a community of future artists that are certain to make their mark in the years to come.

This is a historic day for Phoenix College, and we sincerely appreciate Mr. Fischl honoring us with his visit and allowing us to share him with the community.--Dr. Anna Solley, President

In 2008, Phoenix College joined with the Phoenix Art Museum Contemporary Forum to enhance and expand the Eric Fischl Lecture Series.  Thanks to the partnership, the event moved to the art museum's Whiteman Hall and the audience reach expanded to include Contemporary Forum members, Phoenix College students, alumni, faculty and staff, and art enthusiasts.  The collaboration continued in 2009.

Phoenix College, with generous support from the D.L. Withers Foundation, launched the Eric Fischl Scholars Program. The program, which is the first of its kind in the nation, focuses on the recruitment of high school seniors to complete the first two years of an associate's degree in fine art at Phoenix College. Students attend college as an exclusive cohort, working closely with selected art faculty and associated with Eric.

In 2007, Eric was inducted into the Phoenix College Alumni Association (PCAA) Hall of Fame, in recognition of his legendary career and his ongoing efforts on behalf of Phoenix College and its students. "Eric is a man of authenticity, compassion, and sincerity who genuinely cares about our students" says Frank Luna, Director of Alumni & Development at Phoenix College "We are humbled and proud to have him call PC home."
