History of TRiO Programs
History of TRIO Programs
The Federal TRiO Programs were started from the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to respond to the war on poverty by the administration. The word “TRiO” came from the development of the Upward Bound, Talent Search and Student Support Services program which was originally known as Special Services for disadvantaged students. All of these programs were authorized after the Higher Education Act of 1965 was passed. Over the years, TRiO programs have grown and improved to a wider range of services and diversified it to accommodate more students who need assistance. The new amendments of the Higher Education Act have created more opportunities with the establishment of Educational Opportunity Centers, training programs, Postbaccalaureate achievement programs and specified Upward Bound program for students with requests to study math and sciences.
The Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) has been serving students at PC since 1979. Through the project, PC has established a supportive environment for developing potential and promoting success. The College’s learning center makes a powerful statement about the critical role of student support, serving as a central point of access for the general support programs for all students and for the specialized services for those eligible for assistance through federal TRIO SSS funding. The Learning Center building incorporates study space, a computer assistance lab, staff offices and meeting space and is physically located within proximity of the financial aid and admissions offices at a central intersection of the campus. The arrangement integrates the role of support services among other services at the college reducing anxiety about seeking help and creating mainstream access for students with special needs and physical disabilities. The college supplements staff for the Learning Center and the provision of TRIO SSS services and to coordinate services specifically for the handicapped. The REACH/TRiO Program at Phoenix College began in October of 2005. The REACH/TRiO Program was originally called Student Support Services and has been assisting students for over 25 years.
