Phoenix College Downtown campus

PC Downtown

Nimble, flexible and convenient describe Phoenix College Downtown. The centrally located campus sits in downtown Phoenix and offers accessible classes and training programs with high quality instruction from PC instructors.

Located in a beautifully restored historic building, PC Downtown offers leading edge computer labs, a new Electronic Courtroom, free and low-cost community education courses, and online courses. In addition, its Custom Training and Education division offers customizable training solutions for an employer’s workers.

For example, this past summer PC Downtown partnered with the non-profit Arizona Call-A-Teen Youth Resources, Inc., (ACYR) to help young people get up to speed with jobs and workplace readiness skills.

In cooperation with the ACYR, PC Downtown trained about 126 students ranging in age from 14 to 24 in workplace employability skills. In June, the students completed 30 hours of class time and gained two college elective credits before getting placed with an employer for the remainder of the summer. Topics covered included resume writing, elevator speeches, maintaining a working email address, how to market themselves, professional communication and other facets of employability.

The students were participating in a program developed by ACYR as part of the 2012 Walmart Summer Youth Employment Initiative aimed at inner-city youth. Phoenix was one of seven cities awarded the national grant.

The multifaceted opportunity to develop workplace readiness and apply what they learn on the job responds to a call-to-action issued by President Obama calling on employers to respond to the record levels of unemployment among America's youth. “It’s a foot in the door for these young people as they enter the workforce,” said Roberta Jeffers, director of business and industry partnerships at PC Downtown.

PC Downtown has partnered with ACYR on various training programs over the years. One recent program helped 10 students gain IT industry credentials while they worked in IT jobs.

This is just one example of how PC Downtown is helping business and industry and the community maximize their potential, both as workers and employers.
