This Week in Honors, August 26-30

August 26, 2013

Dear Honors Community,

We trust your first week of classes went well. And we are happy to see so many of you using the Hub as your campus home. Stick around, make friends, find a study partner, hug Bob!

Your Maricopa gmail account and You
Because you're reading this, I may be "preaching to the choir," but still, take this as a reminder to consistently check in with your Maricopa Gmail account. It's part of your responsibility as a PC and Honors Program student. You can forward the gmail to another account you check more often, too, so there's no excuse for not getting information you need and want about college success and engagement. Remind your friends to check theirs, too! And if you have any Honors friends or classmates we may be missing on this distribution list, have them contact us and we'll get them added.

Honors welcomes Julie Huffman to the front desk
Julie will now be sharing front desk duties with Colleen. Julie has an impressive resumé in college advising and customer service, and we're very happy to have her with us. Come on by and introduce yourself.

STEM Scholarships
The National Science Foundation awarded Phoenix College $500,000 that includes student scholarships over its five-year term. The S-STEM Scholarship Program is intended for students who are interested in majoring in Biology, Chemistry or Mathematics, which defines a lot of Honors students. This is a prestigious scholarship (of up to $3500 per semester) and can be renewed for up to four semesters. In addition to financial assistance, the program provides access to mentorship and internship experiences.

The deadline for the new application process (students applying for the first time) is September 1st. Contact Dijana Music for all questions.

Honors Hotspot Points
As a sweetener to entice you to attend certain events, the Honors Program offers Honors students Hotspot Points that you can later redeem for Honors merchandise, bookstore gift certificates and discounts on our end-of-year trip. Stop by the Hub for full Hotspot details.

Honors students needed to staff Honors table at Success Fair
Want to earn a Hotspot Point? PC is hosting a College Success Fair, and Honors needs some students to staff our table and share info about Honors with students who walk by. Contact the office and let us know if you're interested in one or more of the one-hour slots. One hour at the table = one Hotspot.

  • Wednesday, September 4, 11:00-2:00

Upcoming Honors events
We're still working on all the details, and more info will be forthcoming, but mark your calendars now for some Honors events for Fall 2013. Each will be worth a Hotspot.

  • September 18, Honors Forum Lecture, Dr. Luis Fernandez, "The cost of the free market: Examining the role of competition in the Great Recession," 7:00 p.m., Bulpitt Auditorium
  • September 27 (tentative date), representatives will be here to talk about transferring to ASU Barrett Honors College, noon in the Hub.
  • October 24, Food Day, food info fair, Pastor Plaza, 11:00-1:00.
  • October 25, "What's Wrong with Frankenfoods," Miles DeCoster, noon in the Hub.
  • November 1, "Confessional Poetry," Eric Berge, noon in the Hub

Lockers have been assigned
Congrats to those of you who won a locker for Fall semester in Friday's lottery. Julie sent you an email (guess to which account?!) letting you know if your name was drawn, so look for that. Come to the Hub to get your locker assignment. You need to supply your own lock. We'll have another lottery for Spring semester sometime in January.

Warm Regards,
Ms. O'Brien
Honors Director
