Bears’ Women’s Soccer to face Chandler-Gilbert in Region I Quarterfinals
7th-seeded Bears head to postseason for 2nd straight year
Phoenix, Arizona – October 28, 2013 -- Phoenix College is proud to announce that the Bears’ Women’s Soccer team will face Chandler-Gilbert Community College in the Region I Women’s Soccer Quarterfinals Tuesday night in Chandler. It’s the second straight year that the Bears have qualified for the playoffs, and the ninth time in the last 10 years that PC has reached the postseason. The Bears clinched the 7th and final seed in the Region I Playoffs Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over Glendale Community College in the regular season finale for both teams at Hogan Field at Hoy Stadium on the PC campus. It will be the first time that the Bears and Coyotes have met in postseason play since the 2008 Region I Semifinals, which the Coyotes won, 1-0.
The Bears walked off the field Saturday night knowing that while they had done their jobs, their postseason fate was going to be decided by the results of two other matches. They entered the night knowing that they had to win, and then needed either of the two teams just ahead of them in the standings, Pima or Mesa, to lose their final matches. Ironically, it was Chandler-Gilbert who created the open door for the Bears to reach the playoffs as they downed Mesa, 2-0, Saturday night to drop the Thunderbirds to a finishing 8-10 record and behind PC in the final ACCAC Regular Season Standings. The Bears finished off the regular season with four wins in their final six matches to finish with a 9-9-2 mark overall and an 8-8-2 record in conference play.
The Bears head to Chandler looking for their first victory over the Coyotes since October 2nd, 2012, when they shut out the Coyotes, 1-0. Chandler-Gilbert swept the Bears in their two meetings this season, winning, 2-0, on their home field back on August 31st, then outlasting the Bears in double-overtime, 2-1, at Hogan Field at Hoy Stadium on October 5th. Kickoff Tuesday night at the Coyotes’ Soccer Field on Chandler-Gilbert’s Pecos Campus (2626 East Pecos Road in Chandler) is scheduled for 6PM. Per Region I rules, no passes are allowed, so admission prices are $5 for adults, & $3 for students with a valid ID. The winner of tomorrow night’s matchup heads to Thursday’s Region I Semifinals against the winner of the Cochise-Arizona Western matchup at the site of the highest seed.
