Bears’ Softball signs 11 for 2015

January 24, 2014

NJCAA Runners-up look ahead to fortify next year’s roster one week before this year’s season opener

Phoenix, Arizona – January 24, 2014 -- Phoenix College is proud to announce that 11 Arizona high school athletes officially declared their intentions to attend PC next fall and play softball for Heinz Mueller’s PC Bears’ Softball program.  Those 11 high school seniors officially signed their letters of intent to play for PC in a signing ceremony at PC Athletics’ Center for Athletic Victory and Education (known as the CAVE).

The announcement signals just how dedicated Mueller-who was just inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame and the Arizona Softball Foundation Hall of Fame within the last 6 months for his continued softball coaching success-continues to be about thinking about the successful future of the program while still focusing on reeling in another trip to nationals in 2014.  The mass signings are no accident, since Mueller considers the strengths of each of the signees as part of one unit that will be the foundation for the 2015 squad.  “A lot of people think that we can just wait for recruits to come to us, but that’s not at all true,” remarked Mueller about the signings.  “We have to go out and find good players just like everyone else.  The players on this list are all student-athletes that fit well together, and we hope will blend well with the freshmen of 2014 who will be our sophomores of next year.”  The signing class includes three pitchers (two of which who can also play other positions), a trio of catcher/infielders, one pure infielder, two pure outfielders and two that can play either infield or outfield.

Mueller’s criterion on his recruiting class was definitely not limited to on-field prowess, but also included academic success, character and support.  Those characteristics were exemplified by the amount of interest and attendance that the ceremony in the CAVE drew.  “We had a great signing ceremony.  More than 100 people packed the "CAVE' for the event.  Proud parents and family members as well as friends attended and displayed their support to these fine young ladies who are now members of our Phoenix College family,” beamed Mueller.  “This class represents the best that college athletics is and will be in the future.  Not only are they terrific on the field of play but will represent Phoenix College well in the community and in the classroom.”
