Brown named ACCAC Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
Bears’ freshman guard leads Bears to two dominating wins in conference play last week
Phoenix, Arizona – January 22, 2014 -- Phoenix College is proud to announce that PC Men’s Basketball player Brandon Brown has been named as the ACCAC Division II Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 18th. Brown becomes the second Bears’ Men’s Basketball player to earn the award this season, following the lead of Derreck Brooks, who won the inaugural award of the season back in mid-November. The announcement comes just four days after Brown led the Bears to a season sweep of their archrivals, the Glendale Gauchos, with a 90-68 victory at Glendale Community College Saturday afternoon.
Since he first burst onto the ACCAC Men’s Basketball scene this past November, Brown has chosen to let his speed, his driving ability, his outside shot and his unselfishness do his talking for him. This week, it wasn’t just his scoring stats that solidified his choice for Player of the Week, it was his ability to take command of a game as well as to get his teammates involved. Wednesday night, the Bears were still trying to shake the rust from the holiday break off as they had won just 3 of the 5 games they’d played since the end of the fall semester. Brown helped erase any doubts that the rust was gone as the Bears sped away from Chandler-Gilbert midway through the first half, and then expanded a 12-point halftime lead into a 25-point bulge at one point and an 89-71 victory. Brown led the way with 17 points, but also accounted for nearly 30 more Bears’ points by dishing out a career-high 13 assists.
Three days later, Brown and the Bears headed across town to the home of the archrival Gauchos-fully aware that Glendale would be bent on revenge for getting thrashed by 26 points when the two teams met the first time this season in mid-November. Brown responded by scoring 12 first-half points that helped stake PC to a 50-37 halftime lead, and on the defensive end, helped limit the Gauchos’ starting backcourt of Alex Johnson and Michael Barry to just one made field goal. In the second half, Brown helped the Bears break the game open for the 22-point victory, finishing with a second straight ‘double-double’ of 19 points and 10 assists, while forcing 3 steals. Brown also converted 52% of his field goal attempts and made half of his 3-point attempts while averaging 18 points and 10.5 assists in the two games. For the season, the Cesar Chavez High School alum remains 5thin scoring in the ACCAC at 18.4 points per game, has risen to 2ndin the conference in assists (5.6 per game), has jumped back into the ACCAC Top 10 in steals (1.6 per game), and is 16th-best in the league in free throw shooting at 75.3% clip.
Brown and the Bears will try to keep their two-game lead in the race for the top spot on the Division II side of the ACCAC intact as they return home later tonight (Wednesday). They’ll host the South Mountain Cougars in the final game of an ACCAC Men’s-Women’s Basketball doubleheader that will kick off with the Bears’ Women hosting SMCC at 5:30PM, followed by the defending Region I Champion Bears’ Men’s team battling the Cougars’ men at 7:30PM. The doubleheader will be held at “The Bears’ Den”-PC’s home gymnasium (1202 West Thomas Road in Phoenix), and admission prices are as follows: $5 for adults; $3 for students with a valid ID; and kids 12 and under get in FREE. It’s also “Suits And Sneakers” Night for the Bears’ Men, with a portion of the proceeds from the gate going to the American Cancer Society.
