Bears’ Women’s Basketball to host ‘Play for Kay Day” Saturday

February 13, 2014

Proceeds from Saturday’s Bears vs. Central Arizona clash to benefit Kay Yow Cancer Fund

Phoenix, Arizona – February 13, 2014 -- Phoenix College is proud to announce that the ACCAC Women’s Basketball game between the Bears and Central Arizona College this Saturday afternoon, February 15th, will be “Play for Kay Day” with the Bears.  Proceeds from the game will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Research and Awareness Fund.  It is the 10thstraight year that the Bears’ Women’s Basketball program has donated proceeds from a home game to the Yow Fund and cancer fundraising projects through the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

Today’s announcement signals the Bears’ Athletic Family’s continuing dedication to help out with the fight against cancer.  All four of the Bears’ fall sports-football, men’s & women’s soccer, and volleyball-each designated a home date devoted to raising money for breast cancer awareness this past fall, and the Bears’ Men’s Basketball team hosted the American Cancer Society’s “Suits And Sneakers Night” on January 22nd.  Saturday’s event will help raise money through donations and gate receipts to the fund named after one of the more courageous sports stories in recent times.  Kay Yow’s name became synonymous with the fight against breast cancer over the last decade.  Yow was the women’s head basketball coach at North Carolina State University for nearly a quarter-century, and had to fight breast cancer not one but three different times during her tenure at the school, finally succumbing to the disease in 2009.  Before her passing, though, Yow joined forces with both the WBCA and The V Foundation for Cancer Research (ironically formed and named after another famous N.C. State Basketball Coach who lost his own battle with cancer, Jim Valvano) to form the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.  Since then, the Yow Fund has become one of the most well-known organizations in the fight against breast cancer and raising funds and awareness for the cause.

The PC Women’s squad will also take the floor to not just focus on breast cancer awareness but also to get a leg up in the four-way dogfight they’re in to secure one of the final two Region I Division II Playoff spots with just 3 regular season games to play.  They’ll kick off an important ACCAC Men’s-Women’s Basketball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at 2PM at “The Bears’ Den” on the Phoenix College campus (1202 West Thomas Road) against the defending Region I Division I Champion Vaqueras.  Then, prior to the start of the men’s game at 4PM, PC Men’s Head Basketball Coach Matt Gordon will be honored for earning his 200thcareer win at the school.  Admission prices are as follows:  $5 for adults; $3 for students with a valid ID; and kids 12 and under get in FREE; and a portion of the gate receipts will be donated to the Kay Yow Fund.
