Bears’ Softball team to host Breast Cancer Awareness Day Tuesday
Proceeds from doubleheader vs. Lake Region State go to breast cancer research
Phoenix, Arizona – March 17, 2014 -- Phoenix College is proud to announce that the ACCAC Softball doubleheader between the Bears and Lake Region State College from North Dakota this Tuesday afternoon, March 18th, will be Breast Cancer Awareness Day with the Bears. Proceeds from the game will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Research and Awareness Fund. It is the 3rd straight year that the Bears’ Softball program has donated proceeds from a home doubleheader to the Yow Fund and cancer fundraising projects.
Today’s announcement signals the Bears’ Athletic Family’s continuing dedication to help out with the fight against cancer. All four of the Bears’ fall sports-football, men’s & women’s soccer, and volleyball-each designated a home date devoted to raising money for breast cancer awareness this past fall. This winter, the Bears’ Men’s Basketball team hosted the American Cancer Society’s “Suits And Sneakers Night” on January 22nd, and then the Bears’ Women’s Basketball team held their own ‘Play for Kay’ Night to raise money for the Yow Fund on February 15th. Kay Yow’s name became synonymous with the fight against breast cancer over the last decade. Yow was the women’s head basketball coach at North Carolina State University for nearly a quarter-century, and had to fight breast cancer not one but three different times during her tenure at the school, finally succumbing to the disease in 2009. Before her passing, though, Yow joined forces with both the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation for Cancer Research (ironically formed and named after another famous N.C. State Basketball Coach who lost his own battle with cancer, Jim Valvano) to form the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Since then, the Yow Fund has become one of the most well-known organizations in the fight against breast cancer and raising funds and awareness for the cause.
The Bears’ Softball team will host the Royals of Lake Region State College in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday (tomorrow), March 18th, with the first pitch scheduled for 1PM. The games will be held at the Bears’ Softball Stadium on the Phoenix College campus (1202 West Thomas Road). Admission prices are as follows: $5 for adults; $3 for students with a valid ID; and kids 12 and under get in FREE; and all gate receipts will be donated to the Kay Yow Fund.
