’13 Region I Finalists to commence ’14 season at home vs. Scottsdale August 29th

Phoenix, Arizona – July 8, 2014 -- Phoenix College has announced that the 2014 PC Volleyball schedule has been released.  The announcement happens just four weeks before the 2014 Bears hit the volleyball court for their first preseason practices of the season, and just seven weeks before the team officially begins their quest for their 3rdRegion I title in the last four seasons August 29thwith their season opener against Scottsdale.

Like most of the PC volleyball schedules of recent years, the Bears will spend much of the middle of their schedule away from home-including traveling to Prescott, Scottsdale and San Diego, California, to play in a trio of non-conference tournaments in September.  The 2014 season will begin with a three-match homestand as the Bears will sandwich a pair of tough Division II conference opponents, Scottsdale (August 29th) and Pima (September 3rd) around a non-conference challenge on August 30thagainst West Coast Baptist College from California.  Their next three weekends will all be spent playing multiple matches over two- and three-day stretches at the Yavapai Roughrider Invitational (September 5th& 6th), the Scottsdale Volleyball Classic (September 11ththrough the 13th) and the San Diego Mesa Tournament (September 19th& 20th).  They’ll also have conference road matches during the month of September against Chandler-Gilbert (September 17th) and South Mountain (September 26th).  Their only other match of the month will be their first look at the only team to best them in last year’s playoffs, defending Region I DII Champion Glendale, at home on Wednesday night, September 24th.

It will be a busy month of October for the Bears, who will play 11 matches during the 31 days-6 of them at the friendly confines of the Bears’ home gymnasium of “The Bears’ Den”.  The Bears will commence the month’s action at home against Central Arizona on October 1stbefore beginning the second half of the schedule on the road at Scottsdale (October 3rd) and Pima (October 8th).  They’ll then return for their longest homestand of the season, hosting Mesa (October 10th), non-conference Illinois Central (October 11th), Eastern Arizona (October 14th) and Chandler-Gilbert (October 17th) all within the span of one week.  From there, the Bears will finish it up with three out of four on the road, traveling to Yavapai (October 22nd), Glendale (October 29th) and Arizona Western (Halloween night).  Their regular season home finale happens Friday night, October 24th, when they host South Mountain.

All Bears’ home matches will be held at “The Bears’ Den” on the Phoenix College campus (1202 West Thomas Road in Phoenix), and it will be a 7PM first serve for all home matches except the August 30thmatchup against West Coast Baptist (5PM), and the October 11thtilt against Illinois Central (3PM).  The Bears will be striving for their 8thstraight trip to the postseason (and their fourth trip to the NJCAA Division II Tournament since 2007) when the Region I Division II Playoffs open up on Thursday, November 6th, at a site and time to be determined.  The Bears finished with a 15-15 overall mark and an 8-8 record in conference play in 2013.
