Julie Humphrey, an Academic Advisor at Phoenix College (PC), has been recognized by Arizona State University (ASU) with a “Sparking Excellence” award.
Humphrey has been an advisor for 10 years; eight of those with the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), and the last four with Phoenix College. This is the first time Humphrey has been nominated for the Sparking Excellence award and is the only recipient this year. She was nominated by a student who transferred to ASU from Phoenix College. The undisclosed student felt that Humphrey went above and beyond as an advisor, and was welcoming and generous with her time.
“I love my job and love helping students reach their goals,” said Humphrey. “It is incredible to think I made enough of an impact on a student that they thought to nominate me. I am humbled and honored to be recognized for this award.”
She will be recognized on October 4 as a Sparking Excellence awardee during the Community College Advisor Update event on ASU’s Tempe campus.
In addition, Humphrey has held an award in Maricopa Excellence in Advising for the past two years. This is significant in that the award only goes to one person from the entire advising pool across the Maricopa Community College District each year.
“I love working with students over the course of their program, both as their academic success partner and cheerleader, to help them build potential, reach for their dreams and achieve their goals. It is exciting to watch them grow from new student orientation all the way through to graduation when I get to be the first person to congratulate them on all their hard work. I am dedicated to being an advisor because I know what it is like to feel lost and undecided, and my goal is to help my students feel like they can, and will be, successful,” said Humphrey.
