Head Coach Matt Gordon is entering his 10th year as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Phoenix College. In his nine years at Phoenix College, he has won 185 games, and has led the Bears to 5 NJCAA National Tournaments including 2 Final Four appearances, 5 Region 1 Championships, 5 District 1 Championships, and 9 Region 1 Championship game appearances.
This past season the Bears won their 5th NJCAA Region 1 Championship and played in their 5th NJCAA National Tournament under the guidance of Coach Gordon. All of the sophomores were able to transfer to four year colleges: Chris Solomon (1st Team All-American, 1st Team All-Conference, and 1st Team All-Region) signed with Northwood University (FL), Chris Mason (2nd Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-Region) signed with University of Mary (ND), Isaiah Strong signed with Bellevue University (NE), Marquez Jackson signed with Lewis and Clark State College (ID), and James Pierce signed with Peru State (NE).
In 2011-2012, Coach Gordon led the Bears to 21 wins, and their 8th straight Region 1 Championship game. Even though the Bears fell short in the Region 1 Championship Game to South Mountain, 5 sophomores were able to transfer to 4 year schools. Christian Bower (NJCAA All American, ACCAC All Conference, and Region 1 First Team) signed with St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Nathan Bohy (ACCAC All Conference and Region 1 First Team) signed with Peru State in Nebraska, Frank Brown (Region 1 2nd Team) signed with University of Regina in Canada, Taylor Christensen signed with Peru State in Nebraska, and Julian Sargent signed with Mapua Institute of Technology in the Philippines.
In 2010-2011, Coach Gordon guided the Bears to their 4th NJCAA Region 1 Championship and NJCAA Div. II National Tournament Appearance. The Bears posted an impressive 25 wins on their way to an Elite Eight Finish. Coach Gordon was named NJCAA Div. II District 1 Coach of the Year for the 4th time. Nate Bohy, Christian Bower, and Isaiah Strong were all All Conference and All Region Selections. Coach Gordon helped Jason Edwards (Bemidji State) and Darrell Farr (Presentation College) sign basketball scholarships.
During the 2009-2010, Coach Gordon led the Bears to an 18 win regular season and the #1 seed in the Region 1 Tournament. The Bears came up a bit short in losing in the Region 1 Finals to Pima CC. Coach Gordon helped all of his sophomores continue their education at four year universities. Andrew Fulbright and Brandon Flenor signed at Kansas Wesleyan University, Elgin Caldwell signed at Benedictine College, and Shayar Lee signed at Adams State, while Sam Kaserer earned an academic scholarship to Arizona State University.
During the 2008-2009 season, Coach Gordon led the Bears to their second NJCAA Div. II Final Four in the last four years. The Bears won 22 games, while capturing the the NJCAA Div. II Region 1 and District 1 Championships. Coach Gordon was named NJCAA Div. II District 1 Coach of the Year for the 3rd time. Curtis Mitchell and Will Donahue were both named to NJCAA Div. II All-American Teams. The Bears, also excelled in the classroom by being named an NJCAA Academic All-American Team with a 3.1 team GPA.
Coach Gordon helped 5 of his players move on to four year colleges on scholarships. Will Donahue signed with Cal Poly SLO, Curtis Mitchell and Stevie Ledesma both signed to play at Regis University in Denver, CO, Wes Jones signed with Kansas Wesleyan University, and Alex Miller signed with Benedictine College in Kansas.
During the 2007-2008 season, Coach Gordon led the Bears to 16 wins, and a birth in the Region 1 championship game. The biggest accomplishment of the season was the Men's Basketball Team being named NJCAA Academic Team of the Year with a 3.4 GPA. This accomplishment ranks higher than any of the on the court victories during Coach Gordon's tenure at Phoenix College, according the Coach Gordon.
Coach Gordon also helped four of his sophomores continue their playing careers. Matt Rosinski earned a scholarship to play at Regis University, Marko Latinovic earned a scholarship at Erskine College, AJ Woodward is continuing his playing career at Hawaii Pacific, and Just Salzwedel is continuing his basketball career at Boise State University. Two other sophomores, Matt Faubion and Riley McCormick both decided to continue their education at ASU.
During the 2006-2007 season, Coach Gordon led the Bears to their second consecutive 20 win season (the first time in the last 20 years). Coach Gordon also was named NJCAA Div. II District 1 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year. The Bears reached the their second consecutive NJCAA Division II National Tournament (the first time a Division II Arizona Junior College has gone to back to back national tournaments), where they finished sixth. Coach Gordon also helped lead the Bears to their second consecutive Region 1 and District 1 Championships.
Coach Gordon helped Ira Brown (1st Team All American, All Conference, and All Region), Ryan Holmes (1st Team All Region and 3rd Team All Conference), Kaylone Riley, and Mychael Broom sign NCAA Division 1 Letters of Intent, while Romero Hood, Marquis Munn, Justin Williams, and Monti Washington moved on to four year programs to continue their education and basketball careers.
During the 2005-2006 season, Coach Gordon led PC to its best season as a NJCAA Div. II team in school history, while being named NJCAA Div. II District I Coach of the Year. The Bears won 26 games and reached the NJCAA Div. II Final Four (first time in school history) while winning the Region 1 Championship and District 1 Championship. PC was also the first Arizona Div. II men’s basketball team to reach the Final Four.
Also during the 2005-2006 season, Coach Gordon helped graduating sophomores, Tyree Hardge (All Conference 3rd Team), Colby Sedlar, Igor Dutina, and Sascha Stafford (All Conference 2nd Team) move on to four year programs while continuing their education and basketball careers. Also, Coach Gordon helped Ira Brown earn All-American Honors along with being named First-Team, All Conference.
In his first season at PC, Coach Gordon led the Bears to a 10 win improvement over the previous season. Coach Gordon also helped graduating sophomores, Major Willette, George Kirby, Jeff Baron, Enrique Villarreal, and David Lopez move on to four year programs while continuing their education and basketball careers.
Coach Gordon also was an assistant coach at the University of Portland from 2001-2003, where he was in charge of player development and helped in recruiting. Coach Gordon also spent a year at Dominican University where he helped guide the Penguins to a 12-game increase in victories from the previous year and a spot in the league championship game.
Before going to Dominican, Coach Gordon spent a year at Cal State Northridge where he was part of a coaching staff that helped lead the Matadors to their first 20 win season.
Coach Gordon graduated from UCLA, where he was a Student Assistant for four years. During his tenure at UCLA, the Bruins went to four straight NCAA tournaments, reaching the Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen in two of those years.
Matt is married to Iris Gordon, and they have a 5 year old daughter, Madison.
