Eric Fischl Gallery @ Phoenix College

Fischl Lecture Series

Phoenix College and contemporary American painter, sculptor and author Eric Fischl are shaping the future of art in Arizona and beyond by providing life-changing opportunities for students.

In 2005, Fischl returned to Phoenix College to give back to his alma mater and to help aspiring artists. Fischl honors the college’s influence on his life by returning annually with world-famous artists and art enthusiasts to present the Eric Fischl Series.  The Series, held at the Phoenix Art Museum, draws hundreds of students, artists, and community members from across the city and state for an engaging discourse about various art themes.

As part of the event, Fischl presents the prestigious Vanguard Award to Phoenix College students whose artwork receives “Best in Show” in the Student Art Competition.

The Eric Fischl Series at PC is comprised of the following:

• Student Portfolio Critique

• Best In Show - Vanguard Awards

• Guest Lecture & Student Art Exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum

Fischl also provides scholarships for students majoring in fine arts at Phoenix College. Click here to learn more.

2018 Lecture
José Lerma

The 2018 Eric Fischl Lecture Series featured contemporary artist José Lerma.

Drawing inspiration from his personal history, as well as historical figures and events, José Lerma incorporates research and an inventive approach to the traditions of painting and portraiture. Using varying methods and alternative materials, Lerma’s gestures and depictions continue to unfold upon investigation––what appear to be bold, expressionist gestures slowly reveal themselves to be meticulous collages of silicone; or almost vibrating acrylic surfaces come into near focus as infinitely layered drawings.

Born in Seville, Spain. Lerma currently works and lives in Brooklyn, NY and Chicago, IL. He is a professor of painting at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and is represented by Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York.

The lecture will be hosted at the Phoenix Art Museum on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 in Whiteman Hall. The Fischl Lecture Series has become the premier art event for the community and has grown in attendance and prestige since its inception. The lecture provides the venue for individuals to gather with college and university students, educators and art enthusiasts who travel from all parts of Arizona to engage in an open discourse about art and its place in our culture and society.
