Skills and Knowledge

The Phoenix College English department offers English classes for students learning English as a second language. ESL students gain skills and ability with classes in:

  • Grammar, spelling and vocabulary
  • Listening and speaking
  • Reading and phonics
  • Writing of sentences, paragraphs and essays
  • Pronunciation
  • Freshman composition and research
  • Internet and computer ESL resources


Follow the Get Started - Steps to Register. Note: Step 2 includes taking a course placement test/exam. After taking the CELSA* assessment exam to determine level of English skills, students are advised about appropriate classes and program options.

*CELSA is an computerized test used for course placement into the English as a Second Language program for both English and Reading. This test takes 45 minutes to complete and consists of 75 multiple choice questions. The test is computerized only and does not include a listening or spoken portion.

ESL Conversation Circles

Conversation Circles are informal gatherings of students who meet to practice their English listening and speaking skills. There is a small fee of $7.00 per semester for participation.
