ESL Featured Teacher: Kat

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I was born and raised in Arizona. I have been teaching for about 25 years. I first started as a kindergarten teacher. I have been at PC for about 12 years. Not only do I teach ESL reading courses, but I am the EDU Director here on campus.

What do you like most about teaching ESL reading students?

I love the diversity of students in my ESL classes. I learn so much about other places around the world. I also like the challenge of coming up with different learning activities that incorporate reading, writing, speaking and listening so that students get as much exposure to the English language as possible.

What would your students say about you?

I would hope students would say that I am an engaging teacher---I like to get students up, moving around and practicing their English skills with other classmates.

What is your most memorable teaching experience?

I was teaching an ESL grammar class several years ago, and Valentine’s Day just happened to fall on the same day of class. Students brought in a cake and other things from their culture to show their appreciation. I felt very grateful and loved!

What advice would you give to ESL students or to someone thinking about taking an ESL reading class?

Make sure that English practice doesn’t start and stop with the classes you are taking at school. If you want to advance in English, you must practice throughout the day--- EVERY DAY.
