The AHCCCS Scholarship

As demand for skilled professionals in mental health, social work, counseling, criminal justice, psychology, and rehabilitation rises, an exciting opportunity is emerging for students who aspire to make a positive impact.

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) Scholarship, is available to Phoenix College students who are pursuing, or intend to pursue, certain programs related to behavioral health, counseling, and psychology.

Introduced by Maricopa Community Colleges, the AHCCCS Scholarship allows students to expand skills and credentials with fewer out-of-pocket costs.  The award applies to tuition, textbooks, course fees, health/safety requirements, and more. Applicants aren't restricted by income, opening it to a wide swath of students; however, funds are retractable—meaning recipients must complete, and pass, program courses. The application can be completed in as little as five minutes.

Qualifying programs at Phoenix College are related to careers in direct care and behavioral health, such as:

   •  Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Foundations of Behavioral Sciences
   •  Certificate of Completion (CCL) in Adolescent Studies
   •  Associate in Arts (AA), Emphasis in Psychology
   •  Associate in Arts (AA), Emphasis in Counseling and Applied Psychological Science
   •  Associate in Arts (AA), Emphasis in Social Work

New Certificate: Foundations of Behavioral Sciences

One of Phoenix College's newest certificate offerings, Foundations of Behavioral Sciences, is rooted in improving the lives of our community's most vulnerable. Courses are designed to prepare students for work on clinical teams, where they'll assist in the care of people suffering from mental illness, comorbid medical conditions, and challenging behaviors.

This skill-based foundational certificate can open opportunities for both new and experienced workers, in positions such as behavioral health technicians, chemical dependency technicians, and psychiatric aides.  Mental health technicians carry out a wide range of responsibilities, which may include:

   •  Observing patients to detect behavior patterns reported to doctors
   •  Assisting patients with daily functions of personal hygiene, bathing, dressing
   •  Intervening to restrain violent physical, or verbal, behaviors
   •  Helping patients participate in therapeutic/recreational activities
   •  Other client-care duties
