Every child deserves the chance to begin the school year feeling prepared, confident and ready to learn. Sometimes, that chance begins long before the first bell rings, when a community comes together to provide not only school supplies, but also encouragement, care and a sense of belonging.
Backpack Buddies
That spirit was on display this July as BHHS Legacy Foundation's annual Backpack Buddies event returned to Phoenix College. During the three-day event, Phoenix College served as the host site and one of many community partners, welcoming more than 2,000 students from Title I schools across Maricopa County and children in foster care.
One of the event's most meaningful features was its personal shopper experience. Rather than receiving a pre-packed backpack, each student was paired with a volunteer who walked alongside them as they selected a backpack, school supplies, clothing, shoes and hygiene items that best fit their needs and preferences. The experience emphasized choice, dignity and encouragement, ensuring every child felt seen, valued and excited for the year ahead.
"It's inspiring to see so many organizations and volunteers come together for students," said Interim President Heather Kruse. "Phoenix College is proud to serve as a place where our community can come together in support of educational opportunity, and we're grateful to play a part in helping students start the school year with confidence."
Community Supporting Community
The event brought together businesses, nonprofit organizations, civic groups, schools and volunteers from across the Valley, all united by a shared commitment to supporting local students. In addition to the shopping experience, students and their families had access to dental and vision screenings and other community resources that helped prepare them for a successful school year. Phoenix College faculty and staff also welcomed students into the event's Learning Zone, where hands-on STEM activities, including geology demonstrations and 3D printing, introduced young learners to the excitement of discovery while giving many their first glimpse of a college campus.
"Backpack Buddies has always been about more than providing school supplies," said Janette Lopez, from the BHHS Legacy Foundation. "It's about showing every child that their community believes in them. We're grateful to the volunteers, community partners and Phoenix College for helping create an experience where students feel seen, supported and excited for the year ahead."
Backpack Buddies is a reminder of what's possible when organizations, volunteers and community partners come together around a shared purpose. Phoenix College was proud to serve as a community partner and host site, welcoming an event that reflects the college's commitment to expanding educational opportunity and strengthening our community.
As another school year begins, thousands of students will head back to their classrooms with more than a backpack. They'll return knowing an entire community believes in their potential.
