US Spanish Language Premier of Esa Nena Rie, Esa Nena Llora, Esa Nena No Hace Nada at the PC’s John Paul Theatre

"I speak Spanish every day," said Phoenix College (PC) student Aylen Gutierrez, who plays the oldest of three sisters in the the US Spanish Language Premier of Esa Nena Rie, Esa Nena Llora, Esa Nena No Hace Nada at PC's John Paul Theatre Friday, October 6 to Sunday, October 8. According to AZ Big Media 39% of the Phoenix population speaks Spanish. Aylen will put her native language to use in this production, which is performed in Spanish with English supertitles projected behind the stage. Aylen is excited to be in a Spanish production because it “invites more people in our community to come and see it,” she said.

Ivonne Estrella Dominguez attended college to step out of her comfort zone. "If you had met me a few years ago, I wouldn't speak to people," she said. "I was really quiet and shy." Growing up with autism and a learning disability, Ivonne had to overcome many challenges. "There's a lack of support out there for those of us who are different," she said. Upon arrival at Phoenix College (PC), she chose to find her voice, speak up, and find opportunities to get involved on campus.

Mariachi: Mexican Pride and a Cultural Bridge for many PC Hispanic Students

The sound of mariachi brings romping rhythms, lyrics of love and land, and respect for Mexico's natural and cultural heritage. The music celebrates the joys, struggles, and growth of the people. Though typically performed at baptisms, weddings, and holidays, live mariachi music delighted Phoenix College graduates and their families at the May 2023 Commencement , thanks to PC's––and Maricopa County Community College District's––first and only Mariachi ensemble, Osos del Valle.
