Below are some of the Frequently Asked Questions for graduation and commencement:

What do I wear for the commencement ceremony?

Phoenix College has a limited supply of cap/gown/tassel packages on hand for Spring 2022 commencement. Stop by the Hannelly Center/Welcome Desk to see if we have your size and to pick up a free cap/gown/tassel for this year's commencement.
If we do not have your size or you would like to order your cap/gown/tassel through Balfour and have it shipped directly to you, you can place your order online directly with Balfour at:

Tassel Only:  $1.65
Shipping Fee:  $9.35
NOTICE:  Orders placed after April 17 are not guaranteed to arrive in time for graduation.  

Will my name be read at the ceremony?

Yes, your name will be read by one of our readers. 

Can I decorate my cap?  

Yes, graduates may decorate your cap; however, if it is offensive, Phoenix College reserves the right to ask you to remove it.  We will provide you with another cap for the ceremony in these  instances.

What happens if I show up late for any ceremony?

Accommodations will be made the best way possible, if you arrive late.

How long is the ceremony? 

We are anticipating the ceremony lasting approximately two hours.

Will Phoenix College have American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters at commencement?  Who do I contact if I need special accommodations?

Yes, we will have ASL interpreters on stage at commencement.  Please contact Disability Resources & Services (DRS) for accommodations.

What is a program book?

A program book has all the information about the commencement ceremony and lists graduates with their name, degree/certificate earned, distinction, honors, PTK.

When will I receive information about the ceremony?

All students who submitted their application will receive an e-mail from the PC Commencement Committee. 

Can certificate holders participate?

YES!! :) They go through the same process as degree holders.

Are there professional photographic services offered?

Thursday, May 12, 2002, & Friday, May 13, 2002, at 7:30 p.m.

How do I register to participate in commencement and how many guests can a student invite to the ceremony and do guests need tickets?

Register Here to Participate in Commencement - AFTER APPLYING FOR GRADUATION (note Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting students must select the ceremony on May 12 2022). Graduates will sign up in advance for either May 12, 2022, or May 13, 2022, ceremony to accommodate all graduates (first come, first served).  Graduates are limited to six guests each.  Guests do not need tickets.  The ceremony will also be live streamed for those that cannot attend in person. Do I need to have invitations for my family?

If you wish to send out announcements, the Phoenix College Bookstore can special order graduation announcements for you.  They are open for in person shopping and online order pickup: Monday-Thursday, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Friday, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. 

Can I still participate even if I have more classes to take? (Summer in-progress classes)

Yes, students can participate in ANY spring semester they want. They will not receive their diploma until ALL courses and ALL grades are posted.

If I don’t want to participate in the commencement ceremony, do I have to pay a graduation fee?

No, students will not be charged a fee to participate in the commencement ceremony.  

Will there be a printed or virtual program book for commencement?

Yes, there will be a virtual program book (that you can print). You can find the program book here

Do students get a special cord for GPA?

Students will receive a distinction cord if they earned a 3.5 GPA or higher.

GPA for the ceremony/cords will be calculated based on the previous semester.GPA is calculated by the grades for the student's degree. Transfer credits are also included.

The final GPA will be calculated when grades are posted and will be reflected on the student’s diploma/transcript.

Do students receive tassels or stoles for PTK or honors? 

Phoenix College does not provide PTK tassels or stoles. The student will need to purchase these items on the PTK website. If they have any questions they can speak to our PTK rep, in the honors department. Students in the Honors Program can contact the coordinator of this directly at

Are there any extra steps I need to be complete to receive such honors?

PTK- Students sign up for PTK on the website. The minimum GPA to withhold PTK is 3.25.

Honors- Honors students would need to complete 15 credit hours of honors classes to be an eligible honor student. Students need to connect with Safia Sampson ( for any information regarding honors. Also, students would need to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA for their degree.

When can I pick up my cap and gown?

I want a duplicate of my diploma/ certificate sent to me, what do I need to do?

Students who are in need of a duplicate of their diploma will need to email You will be charged a $5 fee. 

Do students really need to have a check sheet to turn in a degree application?

Yes, providing a check sheet will eliminate any chances of your application being denied for missing requirements. 

Are the degree applications online?

The applications are online for students to download on the graduation webpage

How late can a student submit a graduation application?

Students who are NOT participating in commencement can submit their application at any time. 

Students who ARE participating in commencement need to submit their application by March 31 (extended from March 1) to meet the priority deadline. Applications submitted later will be processed when received; however, your name may not be printed in the commencement program book once it goes to print.

Since the ceremony is outside, what happens in the event of bad weather?

The PC Commencement Committee will evaluate the weather conditions, and any changes to the ceremony location/date/time will be shared as soon as possible to our graduates.
